Forum: GratefulDead Subject: Hey Liam --- do you mind providing some insight?

Liam: I wrote the following on your "Rooster" post but realized it would probably unintentionally end-up hijacking it on you.}

I understand if you don't want to reply or don't have the time, but here's my inquiry:

Good Morning -- I follow your posts and appreciate the fact that you've introduced me to some gems I didn't know existed. I don't have your email address so I regret posting yet another personal post on a public Forum. Can you possibly kindly answer the following for me? (Just as a qualifier -- I have zero aptitude in understanding music -- I basically feel my way through the music -- but you obviously have a well-grounded understanding of the inner workings so I trust your opinion.)

1.) CC Rider (1980-06-19 - Alaska) --- not one of my favorite tunes, however when they pulled it out during the 2nd set of the first show it seemed to have a different texture and "feel" that I cannot recall hearing again. Are you familiar with it and do you agree that there was something "different" about that version? Have you heard any other similar perfomrances?

2.) I know you are a Scarlet>Fire fan (as most of us are). What do you think of the "hidden pick" on Dick's Pick #13 (I think it is from 1980 as well) -- in particular, the transition jam --- I didn't see it but I get the feeling that Jerry really appreciated what Brent was doing with the unusual jam as it seems Jerry pulled back a couple of times from entering the "Fire" intro. so Bret could keep goin.' (I know it was a bit slow in parts, but overall, where do you rank it amongst the Scarlet?>Fire jams during the Brent era?)

3.) I gotta admit that I don't "get" all the raves about the Scarlet?>Fire performance from a college show ==98% sure it was something like "St. Patrick's Gymnasium --- possibly in Vermont?) I only have a laptops speakers to listen to the shows, but I can't fully appreciate all the buzz around this version. (I think the Hartford DP=6 version is much better, but wtf do I know???)

4.) If you don't mind my asking, what was the favorite show you saw in-person or have on disc.

Thanks a lot for your time, --- AshesRising

Liam:
Thank you. I can't believe how badly I have f#ck#d-up my laptop -- something about a "paging file" and "Low Disk Space." I can't believe how much supreme Jerry I've had to delete to try and free-up space but I keep getting the error message. (I'm out of work on disability so there'S NO WAY I can call the office and tell them I've almost destroyed this thing; they all hate Jerry and the GD anyways. Think I've ever mentioned the name "Robert Hunter" to them???) I mention the above facts about my computer woes just in case you offer a suggestion or two and don't hear back from me for a few days == it won't be due to lack of gratitude; it will be due to do illiterate user-error who finally killed his laptop!

Thanks for taking the time to respond, --- AshesRising

Ashes

regarding the computer, I do not know. But I have always had success troubleshooting when I use a serach engine and type in, with quotes, the error message, with the word "fixing" before the error message

Liam: Thank you for the suggestion but unfortunately that laptop seems to have had a psychotic meltdowh after I spilled some Kool-Aid on it..... Seriously, though, thank you for the suggestion --- I have actually used that method in the past but no luck this time. I will follow-up with you on your private email. Thanks again, --- AshesRising

ashes

I have not had a chance to look at my hotmail as of yet- I will tonight

By the way, The CC RYder you mentioned first was only the third or fourth time they played it, so I think they were still searching for the sound that song would take

waynecs: Thank you for taking the time to reply --- so that was just a couple of days after the wild 2nd set "Dancin'> Frnaklin's > He's Gone ?> Caution > Other One" at the Cape (10/27) followed-up by the first set opening the following evening at the Cape of "Mississippi > Franklin's". === Brent seemed so much more "ON" when he first began playing with the band.
waynecs: thanks again, --- AshesRising

High guys!

Hey i just had to say i love DP13, the scarlet>fire is right up there on my list when i want to hear that particular combo. I had the opportunity to party with Dick at a bar and then later at the Palladium in Worc. Mass, during the "release party". I dont know if they still do these or not, but it was an attempt to get the family together in the post jerry world, (and sell some cds). It was a great nite, with one of the best deadbands (Slipknot)from the central mass area (now called The Knot i belive due to a heavymetal-eat-your-children-band of the same name)playing with various guests.
I remember walking into the bar and instantly recognizing Dick, having read about every interview he'd done. So i wait a bit and i decide i have to go over and say hello. He was baffled that i recognized him because he was "nobody". He greeted everyone with a hug and was a bit drunk already. :) I soon launched into my list of DP's "Must" shows from the New England area. And was amazed at the detail he remembered from each show i mentioned as he shot some of them down, and assured me others would be released someday. The "DarkStar" show from Boston Garden 9/26/91, and possibly a mix of 87' Worc, Centrum 4/2-4/4/87 to name a couple. I remember being amazed that Dick had "groupies". Unreal. I think these girls thought he was "the grateful dead" or something, they were barely old enough to drink, and kept asking for "backstage passes". We knew it was just a cd-release party but they seemed to think otherwise. LOL
Later on in the evening as we made our way into the venue for the party, 4 of my friends were arrested in an adjacent parking lot for smoking some ganja, and once inside we were told there was no phone to use. We found one of the girls from the office, (cassidy or elieen possibly) and they recognized us from the bar and took us upstairs to a phone so we could get our friends bailed out. Hey we couldnt LEAVE. haha
There was some real hilarious points in the evening, (Dick+BlondeGroupieGirls+Drinks=FUN) but those i will keep private and smile as i think of Dicks Wicked nite on the town, bringing us another nugget of history.
Sorry to rant just some great memories from the post-jerry world i remembered reading your post. :)

Ashes,

The one CC Rider that is quite unique and different is from 12-5-81. There's a nice double time section that they never tried again to my knowledge. Check it out.

Patrick Gymnasium @ University of Vermont is 4/13/83...at least the one with the scarlet>fire you speak of.

I agree, Ashes, I don't get it either. I am not a big fan of that show, to be honest, and I was not terribly impressed by the Scarlet>Fire. Maybe I was distracted while listening or in a bad mood or something, so if somebody could shed the light on this, it would be greatly appreciated.
